Some adventures may be familiar to you and already part of your life exploring the great outdoors, while others compel you to try them–this book shows you how.

The Pacific Northwest is a wonderland of nature. We’re lucky to live in a place so spoiled with natural beauty–rocky and wild seashores, rain forests with ancient trees and cool critters, and glacier-flanked volcanoes that remind us of our region’s geologic past as well as its future. We venture to these spectacular places to learn about them, enjoy them, and also to protect them. Meanwhile, these special places hold the power to teach us more about ourselves.

With this book in hand, every week of the year holds a new outdoor adventure for you!

52 Ways to Nature, Washington is a twist on a typical Northwest guidebook–each seasonal adventure gives you the basics to get started, whether it’s your first time in a sea kayak or you’re brand new to the nocturnal world of stargazing. For each activity, I highlight my top spots to try it around the state. A “Nature Notebook” prompt encourages you to keep track of those experiences through journal notes.

What I loved most about writing this book is packing each adventure with helpful how-to info on all those outdoor hobbies you’d love to try, but don’t know where to begin. It takes the mystery and intimidation out of trying an outdoor adventure that’s brand new to you. All of these adventures are created for beginners, and provide the steps for an absolute novice to get started.

Which nature adventures will you try first? How about discover a geocache in your own neighborhood, or drop a crab pot off a dock on Hood Canal this summer? See the northern lights through a telescope in Goldendale, hunt for beach treasure near Port Townsend, or look for tracks of wild animals in the Olympic rain forest.

Washington state is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. I hope you’ll find inspiration in my new book to go outside and explore often, from your own neighborhood greenspaces to the state’s spectacular national parks.
