Where will you find Seattle’s flakiest croissant, most perfect baguette or tastiest gingersnap?
Many of Seattle’s best artisan bakeries are in its far-flung neighborhoods–removed from the hustle and bustle of Seattle’s downtown core and nowhere near Pike Place Market. To find them, head to tucked-away hoods like West Seattle, Wallingford or Columbia City–neighborhoods where out-of-town travelers rarely tread.
One of my faves is the Columbia City Bakery, which has been keeping local residents full of sweet carbohydrates since 2005. Imagine the luck of living within walking distance to this place, dashing down from your bungalow to pick up some walnut crostini for a dinner party or a couple of bear claws for weekend breakfast.
I never get anywhere near Columbia City without a stop at this place for a latte and fruit scone by the window to watch passerby, or a tomato jam sandwich to go. My favorite indulgence here is the almond brioche bostock, which probably zeroes out any recommended fat gram intake for the day. Indulgences wouldn’t be called indulgences if they weren’t indulgent.
My kid is allergic to eggs, so he knows this place only for their egg-free gingersnap cookies and rolls with butter. When you’re allergic to eggs, indulgence is relative, I suppose.
