Don’t miss a stop in Port Townsend, one of Washington’s most charming seaside towns with it’s historic architecture, fun boutiques, farmer’s markets and romantic restaurants. Fort Worden State Park transports you back to various times of war and has jaw-dropping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Take a short tour of the Coast Artillery Museum, full of military memorabilia like uniforms from several war eras and antique artillery rounds.
South of Port Townsend on the Quimper Peninsula are a few new cideries that have open tasting rooms. On the northern tip of nearby Marrowstone Island is the awesome Fort Flagler State Park, the largest of five impressive military installations that were established in close proximity to protect Puget Sound from invaders during times of war. Stop for a meal at Ajax Cafe, where the menu is inventive and ingredients are seasonal and locally-sourced.
