Eastern Washington’s major metropolitan area is Spokane; and nearly half a million people call it home. Still, Spokane has managed to retain plenty of small-town charm. The best of downtown is found at Riverfront Park, the anchor of Spokane’s revitalized downtown core. Walk or bike the paved trails, enjoy plentiful spaces for the kids to play, and take in a flick at the Imax theater. Spokane’s well-kept neighborhoods range from pockets of hipness in the University District (home to Gonzaga University and Washington State University-Spokane) to Queen Anne mansions in Browne’s Addition. Visit in Spring for the Spokane Lilac Festival and one of the best times for tasting your way through Spokane’s dozen or so wineries.
