In contrast to the northern Oregon Coast’s many seaside communities, only a few towns dot the stretch of shoreline south of Yachats that is largely protected and wild all the way south to the California border. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area occupies more than 50 miles of southern coastline, and several state parks put even more miles of coast under protection from development. The coastal communities of Coos Bay, Port Orford, Brandon and Brookings host visitors drawn to the southern coast for its natural beauty, fishing opportunities, golf, cranberry bogs, and scenic beaches.
