Which Parks to Visit?

In the Pacific Northwest, we have four major national parks:

Crater Lake National Park (Oregon)

Mount Rainier National Park (Washington)

North Cascades National Park (Washington)

Olympic National Park (Washington)

There are dozens of other sites — national monuments, historical parks and preserves  — that are managed by the National Park Service as well.

NEW! Free Parks Admission for 4th Graders and their Families Starting Fall 2015

In February 2015, President Obama announced that the National Park Service will give all fourth graders and their families free admission to national parks and other federal lands for a full year. The “Every Kid in a Park” initiative aims to get all school children into the great outdoors. The program begins in the fall of 2015, so stay tuned for how your family can obtain your free parks pass.

Happy exploring!

Sara – thanks for that. The National Parks Service has removed June 8 from that list since this was published. Very curious… I know sequestration has caused budget cuts to change some things, including the shortening of the camping season and visitor center hours at Mount Rainier National Park. I wonder if that is at play here.

This Saturday JUNE 8 is National Get Outdoors Day, and national parks (as well as many state parks systems) have been fee-free on that day for the past several years.

I just called Mount Rainier National Park and they confirmed that it IS FREE this Saturday JUNE 8 for National Get Outdoors Day. I suggest calling the individual national park you plan to visit and confirming that they are participating in this fee-free day before setting out on June 8.

Thanks so much for reporting this!!
